The origins of Sanquhar Post Office date back to 1712. It is Grade II Listed and is recognised by the Universal Postal Union (the governing body for Postal Administrations around the globe) and the Guinness Book of  Records, as the Oldest Post Office in the World.  Today it offers many more services than just Post and Mail and is operated by our vendors who are only the 15th Postmasters in over 300 years!

Our clients purchased this business and it then went through the Network Transformation programme when it became a Post Office Local Plus.  They are, however, now retiring having spent a huge amount of time, effort and cost in restoring this lovely property and business ready for new owners to become the 16th Postmasters at this prestigious office.

This Post Office is a Local Plus Office.  This means that the Post Office services can be available from the retail counter during all retail hours.

This branch also has the benefit of Mail Sorting and has a dedicated sorting office at the rear where seven postmen are employed by Royal Mail.

It should be noted that the Post Office salary for new applicants will be raised up to £40,200 - £41,100 from £26,200 due to the historic significance of the property.  Added to this is a healthy retail income.

A characterful cottage style provides owners accommodation accessed separately from the business. Accommodation comprises:  hallway, fully fitted kitchen, bathroom with modern suite, large sitting/dining room, lounge with feature fireplace, two double bedrooms, a boxroom/bedroom 3 and shower room.  The home benefits from central heating.

There is a courtyard and a range of outbuildings—all recently refurbished (these were originally the home of the Mail Coaches Horses).  These could be converted to either a Coffee Shop with outside tables or even to small holiday lets (subject to planning permission) as there is separate access to the rear.    There is a lovely well maintained garden laid mainly to lawn enclosed by a stone wall and to the end of this is the large two storey Sorting Office. This is a stone building that was originally the Old Forge and is now configured over 2 levels with ground floor garage area and first floor sorting office.  Both floors have recently been refurbished.  It would also lend itself to be converted to a holiday  let or similar (subject to planning permission).

Truly a rare opportunity - must be viewed!
